The Lesson Title - Our Traditions Lesson 2.1 Social Studies Notes Class 5.

Traditions are the old practices of different castes of people being followed for a long time. The people have been performing their customs from time immemorial. Customs and traditions are transferred from generation to generation. The old practices of ancestors are still preserved and continued in the form of social traditions and custom.

There are both positive and negative aspects of traditions and custom. The negative aspects cause social problems.

The rural people believe in witches and sorcerers. They blame the poor and helpless families and women of being sorcerers. They practise untouchability. The so-called lower caste people aren't allowed to enter the temples. Gender and caste discrimination still exist in the rural areas. These are the examples of bad practises or negative aspects of traditions.

There are also some bad custom in practice in our country like Jhuma pratha, Deuki pratha, Dowry system, Child marriage and Ghumto pratha.

Nevertheless, there are some traditional practises which are praise worthy. We respect parents, teachers and senior citizens and love and help the juniors. The juniors show due respect to the seniors and the seniors love and help the juniors. We observe Father's Day, Mother's Day and Teacher's Day to pay respect to them. The parents give us Tika and blessing during Dashain and other occasions.

We also have a good tradition of welcoming the guests when they come to our home. Foreigners are welcomed with good hospitality and honour. Eating food after taking a bath and changing dress is also a good tradition. During Tihar festival, sister give tika and garland of flowers to their brothers to strengthen the unbroken relationship of brother and sister. Washing hands and mouth with soap and clean water before and after eating is also a good habit in our society.

Celebrating different festivals like Dashain, Tihar, Teej, Lhosar, Chhath, Christmas, Eid, Udhauli, Ubhauli, unites the people and helps to strengthen their relationship. Family members gather in their home during their main festivals and share their feelings and responsibilities at least once a year. Celebrating festivals is also a good custom of the society.

We should be able to distinguish between good and bad custom. Good custom and traditions should be preserved and practised regularly while the bad custom and traditions should be discontinued forever. Only good custom and traditions make our country culturally rich. - swarnim publication.
