The Lesson Title - Our Country Our Pride Lesson 2.4 Social Studies Notes Class 5.

(Last week Anupama Gurung wrote a letter to her cousin sister Kripa Gurung who has been living in England for the last six years. Here is a copy of her letter.)

Dear Sister,
Jan 10, 2019

I am very fine with all my family members and hope you to be the same. Having born and grown up in England you mayn't have good knowledge about Nepal. So, I'm going to write about our country in this letter.

Nepal is a small mountainous and landlocked country located in the lap of the Himalayas. There are very high, snow covered and beautiful mountains in the northern part of Nepal.

Our country is also known as the 'land of the highest mountain'.

Mt. Everest which is to the northeast part of Nepal bordering with China is the world's highest peak. It is at an elevation of 8848m above sea level. Besides Mt. Everest, there are several high mountains in Nepal over 7000m above sea level. Mt. Kanchenjungha is the third highest mountain in the world. It also lies in Nepal.

The high Himalayas of Nepal are panaromic and enchanting for sight seeing and mountaineering. Mt. Gaurishankar, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Lhotse, Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, Nilgiri Himal, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Api, Mt. Saipal, Mt. Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range are worth seeing among the major high mountains of Nepal. Similarly, Rara lake, Shey Phoksundo lake, Fewa lake and Tilicho lake are the beautiful lakes of Nepal. Rara lake is the largest lake of Nepal. Shey Phoksundo lake is the deepest lake of Nepal. Tilicho lake lies at the highest altitude in the world.

Beautiful birds like lophophorus (Danfe), Munal and Spiny Babbler are found in the high Himalayas and peacock, dove, pigeon, parrot, crane and sparrow are found in Terai and Hilly regions. Spiny Babbler is a small bird found only in Nepal. Nepal is also a world famous country from religious point of view. There are many temples, monasteries, vihars, chaitya, inns and gumbas in Nepal. Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is also known as 'the City of temples'.

Pashupatinath temple, Swayambhunath stupa, Boudhanath stupa, Budhanilkantha temple, Rani Pokhari temple (Kathmandu), Krishna temple (Patan), Changunarayan temple (Bhaktapur), Ram Janaki temple (Janakpurdham), Sworgadwari (Pyuthan), Maisthan (Ilam), Kalika Mandir (Baglung), Bindyabasini temple (Kaski), Manakamana temple (Gorkha), Muktinath Temple (Mustang) and Bagheshwori temple (Banke) are the main cultural and religious heritages of Nepal.

There are deep and fast flowing rivers that originate from the high Himalayas. Some of the gorgeous rivers of Nepal are the Karnali, the Sunkoshi, the Indrawati, the Trishuli, the Marshyangdi, the Kali Gandaki and so on. They are useful for rafting and water sports. The Karnali is the longest river of Nepal. The Saptakoshi is the largest river of Nepal. They help us to irrigate the fields, generate hydroelectricity and supply drinking water.

Lumbini is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha. It is historically and religiously important heritages of Nepal. We should feel proud of being Nepalese. We should work for the preservation and protection of the national heritages so that our future generations will be able to see them. These natural, cultural and historical heritages also help us to earn a lot of foreign currency since a large number of tourists visit our country to view these heritages every year.

The letter seems to be long enough. Keep in touch. Good bye.

Your loving sister,
Anupama Gurung
Pokhara
